AS8412 TMA Magenta Telekom

Registered as T-Mobile Austria GmbH and trading as Magenta Telekom, this is

Austria's converged number-two operator: mobile, cable broadband and business

connectivity on a single AS. Magenta is the Deutsche Telekom group's Austrian arm,

formed when T-Mobile Austria absorbed the cable operator UPC Austria.

What it's used for

• All three of the company's access businesses at once, and the reverse DNS shows each of them plainly:
• Mobile subscribers on NNN.public.t-mobile.at.
• Cable broadband on IP-ADDR.cable.dynamic.surfer.at — the surfer.at name is inherited from the UPC/Chello cable lineage.
• Business and static assignments on IP-ADDR.static.upcbusiness.at, plus older ranges still resolving under inode.at, an ISP the group acquired years ago.

Notable

• A large eyeball network of roughly 1.5 million IPv4 addresses, with strong IPv6 deployment alongside it.
• It is not a mobile-only AS despite the T-Mobile registry name. Mobile, fixed-cable and business address space are interleaved here, so an address in this AS can be a phone, a household or a company office. Treating the whole AS as one access type will misplace a large share of it.
• The rDNS is a fossil record of Austrian ISP consolidation: t-mobile.at, surfer.at, upcbusiness.at and inode.at all coexist in one routing table.

Interesting

• The TMA handle and the Magenta brand name sit on the same object, one from the T-Mobile era and one from the rebrand, which is why datasets disagree about what to call this network.
