MTAONLINE-AS is Matanuska Telecom Association, Inc. (MTA), the member-owned telecommunications cooperative serving the Matanuska-Susitna Valley in Alaska — Palmer, Wasilla and the surrounding borough. Its reverse DNS lives under mtaonline.net, the co-op's long-running consumer internet brand.

What it's used for

Fixed broadband and telephone service to Alaskan members. The AS announces 51 IPv4 prefixes (~40,192 addresses) and one IPv6 /32 (2607:f398::/32), with 25 observed neighbours in RIS. That neighbour count is higher than a pure enterprise but far short of a wholesale carrier — it reads as a regional ISP that buys multiple transit paths and peers where it can, which matters more than usual in Alaska where capacity to the Lower 48 is expensive.

The subscriber space is numbered mechanically: sampled PTRs are all of the form 5-192-137-216.mtaonline.net, a reversed-octet pattern applied across 216.137.0.0, 72.35.0.0, 216.152.176.0 and 64.4.224.0 space. That is an access network assigning addresses to customer equipment at scale. Every prefix registration traces back to MTA's own ARIN networks or its MTAONL handle, so this is a real operator holding its own inventory, not leased space.

Interesting

One sampled address, 216.137.208.5, answers as mail.matsugov.us — the Matanuska-Susitna Borough's own mail host, sitting inside the co-op's address space. Rural cooperatives are frequently the only serious network operator in their region, so the local government, schools and hospital end up as customers on the same AS as the households. The mix is why the eyeball read holds even though some of the space plainly serves institutions.
