AS3130 RGNET-SEA RGnet Seattle Westin

RGNET-SEA is RGnet, the small network run by long-time routing researcher and

network operator Randy Bush. The name points at its home: a rack in the Westin

Building, Seattle's carrier hotel.

What it's used for

• Routing research and measurement. RGnet describes itself as "just a research rack or two", and it takes transit and peers openly, largely so that it can observe and experiment with real BGP from a real vantage point on the internet.
• It also carries psg.com, the long-running personal and research host behind much of that work.

Notable

• This is neither an eyeball ISP nor a commercial host. It is a deliberately tiny network whose value is in what it lets people learn about routing, and it turns up regularly in BGP research and operator mailing-list traffic.
• The AS number now sits under the RIPE registry, held by the Estonian entity RGnet OÜ, though the network itself lives in Seattle.

Interesting

• Its open peering policy asks for neither contracts nor traffic ratios, which is about as far from a commercial peering posture as a network can get.
