AS8674 NETNOD-IX Netnod AB

NETNOD-IX Netnod AB is the Swedish neutral internet-exchange operator, running the Netnod IXPs in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Sundsvall and Luleå. The same AS also carries Netnod's DNS and time services.

What it's used for

The AS announces a small, stable inventory — 16 IPv4 prefixes (roughly 7,900 addresses) and 10 IPv6 prefixes — against 294 observed BGP neighbours. That ratio is the signature of exchange-point and anycast infrastructure rather than a network with customers: the address count is tiny, but almost 300 other networks see routes from it.

The space backs Netnod's own service platform rather than end users:

• i.root-servers.net, one of the thirteen DNS root servers, which Netnod operates and anycasts worldwide.
• Authoritative DNS and secondary-DNS services, including anycast for national ccTLDs.
• Netnod NTP, the Swedish national time-distribution service, synchronised to atomic clocks maintained with RISE.
• IXP route servers and peering-LAN management for the Netnod exchanges.

Notable

Netnod's roots go back to the mid-1990s reorganisation of Swedish internet interconnection (D-GIX in Stockholm), and its prefixes have been visible in the global routing table since RIS records begin. The organisation is owned by the TU Foundation and operates on a neutral, not-for-profit basis.

Interesting

Exchange points, root servers and registries have no honest slot in an ISP-style taxonomy. Netnod is not hosting, transit or an eyeball network — it is shared internet infrastructure, so it is left unclassified rather than forced into a bucket. Its prefixes should not be read as a service footprint; anycast means the same addresses answer from many countries at once.
