AS8002 STEALTH

STEALTH — Stealth Communications Services, LLC, a fibre-optic Internet service

provider that builds and operates its own network under the streets of New York

City. Founded in 1995, it sells dedicated business connectivity in Manhattan and

the outer boroughs.

What it's used for

• Dedicated fibre internet access for businesses: Stealth lights its own fibre and hands each customer a wavelength rather than a shared access medium.
• Transit and interconnection for those customers out of NYC carrier hotels.

Notable

• This is a business network, not an eyeball one. Its addressing is handed to companies at fixed sites; there are no dynamic subscriber pools and almost no generic reverse DNS at all — the names that do resolve belong to individual customer hosts.
• The AS carries only a handful of prefixes (roughly 25k IPv4 addresses out of 206.252.192.0/19 and 207.251.64.0/18, plus 2001:458::/32) yet shows dozens of BGP neighbours. Dense peering on a small address footprint is the shape of a metro fibre operator sitting on the NYC exchanges.
• An address here most often belongs to an office, not a home and not a datacentre tenant.

Interesting

• Stealth entered a public/private partnership with the City of New York in 2015 to extend fibre into the Brooklyn and Queens industrial business zones.
• Both the ASN and the early 2001:458::/32 IPv6 allocation date from the era when a mid-sized regional ISP could still get a two-byte AS number.
