AS7610 NUS-GP-AS-AP NUS Gigapop

NUS-GP-AS-AP is the NUS Gigapop, the high-speed exchange and external-connectivity point run by the National University of Singapore's IT department. A "gigapop" is a regional aggregation point for research-and-education traffic.

What it's used for

• External peering and transit for NUS and for Singapore's research-and-education community. The ASN announces a single IPv4 block, 202.51.240.0/21, plus 2402:400::/32.
• Reverse DNS is institutional and router-heavy: names such as nus-gw2.gigapop.nus.edu.sg mark the border gateways. There is nothing resembling a subscriber pool anywhere in the space.

Notable

• This is a research-network exchange, not a campus access network. The addresses front peering routers and a small number of shared services rather than student or staff machines, so the address count is far smaller than a university of NUS's size would suggest.
• NUS Gigapop appears at several Singapore colocation facilities and internet exchanges, which is the shape you expect of an R&E interconnect: many peers, little end-user space.

Interesting

• The gigapop model came out of the US Internet2 era, where a handful of regional aggregation points fed the national research backbone. Singapore's version pairs with SingAREN, the national advanced research and education network, whose early work was published out of NUS.
