SINGTEL-AS-AP is STiX, the Singapore Telecommunications Internet Exchange: Singtel's international IP transit backbone. Launched in 1998, it was the first regional internet backbone in South-East Asia and remains one of the largest IP networks in Asia-Pacific.

What it's used for

• Wholesale IP transit. STiX sells full-table transit to carriers, ISPs and content networks across Asia, and peers extensively in Asia, Oceania, the US and Europe.
• It rides Singtel's submarine-cable capacity (APCN2, SEA-ME-WE, SJC, Unity and others), which is what lets a Singapore-anchored AS act as a genuinely intercontinental backbone.

Notable

• This is Singtel's carrier AS, not its eyeball network. Singtel's Singapore consumer broadband rides SingNet (AS3758). Conflating the two is a common mistake: traffic seen from AS7473 is transit, not residential subscribers.
• The AS-STIX route-set is a familiar sight in Asian routing policy, listing the many downstream networks that reach the internet through AS7473.

Interesting

• Singapore's position at the crossing point of the Indian Ocean and Pacific cable systems is why a national carrier from a city-state ended up operating a top-tier regional backbone. Geography, more than market size, made STiX.
