HURONTEL is Huron Telecommunications Cooperative Limited (Hurontel), an independent telephone cooperative in Huron County, Ontario, Canada. It is a rural incumbent-style access provider: all its space is registered to its own ARIN handles (HURONTEL-1BLK through HURONTEL-5BLK) and the reverse DNS lives under hurontel.on.ca.

What it's used for

Consumer and small-business broadband in rural southwestern Ontario. The AS announces 39 IPv4 prefixes (~30,720 addresses) and one IPv6 /32 (2610::/32), with 11 observed neighbours — an upstream handful, not a peering fabric. Everything about the shape says eyeball network: modest address space, many longer prefixes carved out of a few /19s and /20s, and a short list of transit relationships.

The reverse DNS is the clincher and it names the access technology, not the customer. Sampled PTRs read pppoe.dyn-96.44.32.5.hurontel.on.ca and ipoe.dyn-96.44.36.5.hurontel.on.ca — dynamic subscriber pools terminated on PPPoE and IPoE concentrators, the standard way a telco co-op numbers DSL and fibre customers. A gateway hostname hsia22-god-gw.hurontel.on.ca uses the industry abbreviation for High Speed Internet Access, and cpe4.bgcdsb.org shows customer-premises equipment at a local institution.

Interesting

The AS also carries PTRs under tcc.on.ca and brktel.on.ca — Tuckersmith Communications and Brooke Telecom, two other Ontario telephone cooperatives. Small co-ops in the region routinely share transit, routing and infrastructure through a common AS rather than each buying their own, so one number ends up carrying several sister networks' subscribers. The space is still self-registered throughout, which distinguishes this from an address-leasing arrangement.
