AS9489 KARINET-AS Korea Aerospace Research Institute

AS9489 (KARINET-AS) is held by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, South Korea's national aerospace research organisation. KARI is based in the Daedeok science cluster in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, and works on launch vehicles, satellites, satellite-data applications and aeronautics.

What it's used for

This is a government research institute's own network, not a service provider. The AS originates 9 IPv4 prefixes carrying 65,920 addresses, and the shape of that holding is the interesting part: the bulk is a single legacy class-B, 150.197.0.0/16, with six /24 more-specifics punched out of it (150.197.6.0/24, 150.197.10.0/24, 150.197.226.0/24, 150.197.243.0/24, 150.197.244.0/24, 150.197.249.0/24) plus two blocks from unrelated Korean space (118.128.121.0/24 and a /25 at 211.180.135.0/25). The more-specifics alongside a covering aggregate are ordinary internal traffic engineering — steering particular sites or services out a chosen path.

Two observed BGP neighbours and no IPv6. A network sitting on 65k addresses with two peers is definitionally not a carrier: the address count is an early-allocation artefact, and the peering count says it takes transit and originates only its own space. Everything here is consistent with a single institute's campus and laboratory network, plus a small amount of externally-numbered space (the 118.128 and 211.180 blocks) picked up later, probably for a satellite ground station or an off-campus facility.

• The /25 announcement (211.180.135.0/25) is at the edge of what most operators will accept — many filter longer than /24 — so it is likely only usable within a specific upstream relationship.
