AS8878 NFON-AS

NFON-AS belongs to NFON AG, a Munich-headquartered, publicly listed provider of cloud telephony — hosted PBX and business voice (its main product line is Cloudya) sold across Germany, Austria and much of Europe.

What it's used for

NFON's own voice platform. The AS announces roughly 2,300 IPv4 addresses in two prefixes (109.68.96.0/21 and a /24) plus one IPv6 prefix, and the sampled reverse DNS is all first-party nfon.net infrastructure: mail (smtp01.nfon.net) and platform hosts on dhcp-a-NNN.nfon.net. There is no residential naming and no third-party space. Customer handsets and SIP endpoints sit on their own access ISPs; what lives here is the service side.

Notable

• 128 observed BGP neighbours against only ~2,300 addresses. That ratio is the interesting part of this AS. It is the shape of a voice platform, which peers widely so that SIP and RTP reach customers and carriers over short, low-jitter paths, rather than of a network that needs address space.
• The dhcp- label in the reverse DNS names an internal addressing mechanism inside NFON's platform. It is not evidence of subscriber pools. This is the same trap as PPPoE/VPN labels elsewhere.
• Classified business: an enterprise SaaS operator running its own service network, not an ISP, a host or a transit carrier.
