AS8874 BARTELS_FE

BARTELS_FE is the autonomous system of Oliver Bartels F+E, a small Munich engineering firm best known as the maker of the Bartels AutoEngineer EDA suite and the Bartels Autorouter. The AS carries the company's own network, not a customer base.

What it's used for

Corporate and product infrastructure for a single German engineering company. AS8874 originates a single IPv4 /24, and the sampled reverse DNS lands entirely in bartels.de: a nameserver (ns.bartels.de) and an internal host (octoivm.bartels.de). There is no subscriber-style naming (dsl-, pppoe-, pool.) anywhere in the space, and RIS observes just one neighbour, so this is a single-homed end-site network rather than an ISP.

Notable

• Roughly 256 addresses across one prefix and one upstream. This is about as small as a routed AS gets while still being a genuine independent network.
• The company's work spans PCB/IC design automation, hardware and software development, and sports timing/diagnostics systems. The AS exists to give that business its own provider-independent addressing.
• Registered contacts and reverse DNS agree on the holder, so the space geolocates honestly to Germany.

Interesting

Bartels has been in circuit-layout automation since the late 1980s, and its EDA tooling was used in early GSM hardware development. The AS number is an early RIPE-era allocation to a company that never grew into an ISP, and never needed to.
