AS8829 ELMONET-AS

ELMONET-AS is ElmoNet Oy, a customer-owned Finnish broadband operator based in Ruovesi, serving Pirkanmaa, Central Finland and South Ostrobothnia. It was Pohjois-Hämeen Puhelin Oy — a regional telephone company founded around 1900 — until a 2020 rename, and it now builds and sells fibre-to-the-home.

What it's used for

Fixed broadband access, mostly fibre, to homes and small businesses in rural central Finland. The reverse DNS says so directly and explicitly labels the split: host-IP-ADDR.dynamic.elmonet.fi for dynamically-assigned subscriber addresses and host-IP-ADDR.static.elmonet.fi for fixed ones, alongside a large plain elmo.fi pool. A gateway router in 62.106.0.0/19 still resolves as ruo-kes-phpoy-gw1.phpoint.net — ruo for Ruovesi and phpoy for the old Pohjois-Hämeen Puhelin name.

Notable

• About 33k IPv4 addresses across seven prefixes plus IPv6 — the whole inventory is coherent Finnish RIPE space with first-party rDNS, no third-party registrants.
• Only four observed BGP neighbours. A small regional operator buying transit rather than peering broadly.
• Two generations of the company's identity coexist in the live reverse zones: phpoint.net from the telephone era, elmonet.fi and elmo.fi from the fibre era.

Interesting

Finland's rural telephone cooperatives were locally owned from the start, and many of them never sold. ElmoNet remains 100% domestically and customer-owned, which is why a 120-year-old village phone company is still originating its own BGP.
