AS8795 MOBIKOM Mobikom Internet Department

MOBIKOM Mobikom Internet Department is a stale handle on a live network. The AS is held today by Vivacom Bulgaria EAD, the Bulgarian national incumbent — the company known as Bulgarian Telecommunications Company (BTC) until its September 2022 rename. Mobikom itself is long gone.

What it's used for

Despite the handle, this is not a mobile network. Mobikom was Bulgaria's NMT analogue mobile operator, a 1992 joint venture between Cable & Wireless, BTC and Radioelectronic Systems. It was killed off by GSM and shut down in 2008. The AS survived the operator and was absorbed into BTC's estate.

What it carries now is a small block of fixed business assignments: about 1,790 IPv4 addresses across seven scattered /24s, with only two observed BGP neighbours. The sampled reverse DNS is Vivacom's generic incumbent naming — A-B-C-D.ip.btc-net.bg, still on the old BTC domain — alongside named third-party hosts such as bnbank.org (a bank) and router-btc-213.sts.bg (a customer's edge router). There are no dsl, pppoe, dyn or pool labels, and no mobile or GPRS naming anywhere.

Notable

• The name is a double trap. A keyword read of Mobikom … Internet Department files this as mobile; it is neither mobile nor a distinct operator. Vivacom's actual eyeball and mobile networks are numbered elsewhere.
• The rDNS is a small time capsule: an AS named for an operator dead since 2008, serving addresses under a corporate domain (btc-net.bg) retired as a brand in 2022.
