PORTAL-TO-WEB belongs to EDV Beratung Mersberger, a small German IT

consultancy in Türkheim, Bavaria, trading under the portal-to-web.de name. It is

essentially a one-office operation that happens to run its own BGP network.

What it's used for

• Hosting and connectivity for the consultancy's own services and for a small number of German customers.
• Routing provider-independent address space on behalf of those customers, so they keep their addresses independently of any single upstream.

Notable

• About 1,500 IPv4 addresses across five prefixes plus two IPv6 /48s, behind a single upstream. Only a couple of dozen domains resolve into the space.
• Some prefixes are RIPE PI blocks registered to other German parties (netnames such as WEILHAMMER-NET and ECKEL-NET-1) rather than to Mersberger. This is the normal shape of a small provider announcing customer PI space, not an address-broker: every block is German, RIPE-registered, held by a settled registrant, and assigned in 2003–2007. Even so, do not attribute those prefixes' owners to the AS holder.

Interesting

• The AS is a good example of how low numbers survive in odd corners: a four-digit AS carrying less address space than a single home ISP allocation, run by a consultancy rather than a carrier.
