Autonomous System 7765 (KOUMBIT) belongs to Koumbit, a Montréal-based

non-profit worker collective that provides web hosting, virtual servers and

colocation, largely to community groups, activists and other non-profits in

Québec.

What it's used for

• Originating a single small block of ARIN space (199.58.80.0/22) used for Koumbit's own hosting platform: shared web hosting, VPS/virtual machines, mail and the co-op's internal infrastructure.
• Reverse DNS across the range lands consistently on koumbit.net — a mix of service hostnames and switch/router names such as sw0.core0-arin01.koumbit.net and sub0.jenkins.koumbit.net, i.e. an operator's own machines rather than subscriber pools.

Notable

• This is hosting, not an access network. There are no DSL, cable or PPPoE subscriber pools here; the addresses are servers in a datacentre, so they should be read as infrastructure addresses, not as end users at home.
• The whole AS is tiny by ISP standards: roughly a thousand IPv4 addresses. Address count is a poor proxy for significance here — Koumbit is a small organisation running a deliberately modest, self-managed platform.

Interesting

• Koumbit is structured as a collective rather than a conventional company, and its stated mission is to keep independent, free-software-based hosting available to organisations that would otherwise depend on large commercial clouds. It is one of the few ASNs of this era held by a non-profit tech co-operative rather than a corporation or a university.
