AS7679 QTNET QTnet,Inc.

QTNET is QTnet, Inc., the telecoms subsidiary of the Kyushu Electric Power group and the operator of BBIQ, the main independent fibre-broadband service across Japan's Kyushu island.

What it's used for

• Roughly 761,000 addresses across thirty-six prefixes, plus 2001:348::/32 in IPv6 — by a wide margin the largest network in this range of AS numbers.
• Reverse DNS is overwhelmingly consumer: nearly every prefix sampled resolves to NN-NNN-NNN-N.ppp.bbiq.jp or .ppps.bbiq.jp, sequential per-subscriber names on the BBIQ access network. A minority of space carries a cyberhome.ne.jp ISP brand and delegated customer sub-blocks.

Notable

• A textbook eyeball network. Addresses in it belong to households and small businesses in Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima and the rest of Kyushu. Nothing here should be read as hosting or datacentre space, despite the AS also carrying the company's data-centre business on a small share of its prefixes.
• The ppp. label in the rDNS is a fossil: subscribers are on fibre, but the sessions are still PPPoE, so the naming convention survived the technology it described.

Interesting

• Like Enecom in Chugoku ([AS7670](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS7670)) and HTNet in Hokuriku ([AS7668](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS7668)), QTnet exists because a regional electricity monopoly already owned fibre on its transmission network. Of that cohort it grew the largest consumer base, and BBIQ became a real competitive alternative to NTT's FLET'S across Kyushu.
