HKCIX-AS-AP is registered as "HongKong Commercial Internet Exchange" and is run

by IXTech Limited, a Hong Kong IT and datacentre company operating under the HKCIX

name. Despite the name, it is not an internet exchange point.

What it's used for

• Internet data centre and cloud hosting: IXTech sells colocation, IDC and cloud platform services, IP transit, MPLS IP-VPN and CDN service to business customers in Hong Kong and around the region.
• The AS announces around a hundred prefixes, chiefly small /24s out of the legacy 202.181.0.0/16 range plus newer APNIC blocks, and hosts several thousand domains on a comparatively small pool of addresses.

Notable

• The "Internet Exchange" in the name is a trap. A real IXP announces almost nothing, because its job is to carry other networks' peering traffic rather than to hold address space of its own. This AS carries tens of thousands of addresses of ordinary hosting and customer space, so it reads as a commercial hosting and transit provider with an exchange-flavoured brand.
• Reverse DNS across the space is sparse, and where it exists it lands on customer domains rather than on any operator-owned naming scheme, which fits a colocation and IDC business where tenants set their own records.

Interesting

• The 202.181.0.0/16 range is early Hong Kong address space, and much of what this AS announces is carved out of it as individual /24s handed to customers.
