Autonomous System 7029 (WINDSTREAM) is the main network of **Windstream

Communications**, a large US telephone and broadband carrier headquartered in

Little Rock, Arkansas. Its consumer broadband is sold under the Kinetic brand.

What it's used for

• Residential and small-business fixed broadband — DSL and fibre — across Windstream's largely rural and small-town US footprint, plus business circuits.
• Reverse DNS is textbook subscriber addressing: h1.0.16.98.static.ip.windstream.net and h1.0.184.173.dynamic.ip.windstream.net, with separate static and dynamic pools.

Notable

• A very large eyeball network — thousands of announced IPv4 prefixes and one of the bigger IPv4 footprints in the ARIN region. Addresses here almost always mean a home or a small office, not a server.
• Windstream grew by acquisition, and its address space still shows it: parts of the network reverse to ip.mcleodusa.net, from McLeodUSA, a competitive carrier absorbed into Windstream years ago.

Interesting

• The static/dynamic split is encoded directly in the reverse name, which makes Windstream space unusually easy to reason about: dynamic means a rotating consumer line, static a fixed assignment.
