AS4995 Netup S.A.

AS4995 is held by Netup S.A., the Chilean telecom and data-centre operator that trades as Netglobalis. The network is based in Santiago and is registered through LACNIC.

What it's used for

Netglobalis sells connectivity, managed IT, and colocation to Chilean businesses rather than mass-market home broadband. The AS carries its corporate internet access customers and the servers in its Santiago data-centre footprint, and it also provides upstream addressing for a handful of smaller Chilean networks.

Notable

This is a business-and-hosting network, so its address space reads as a mix of enterprise offices and data-centre servers rather than a residential eyeball pool. Volumes are small by carrier standards, in the low thousands of IPv4 addresses, but the AS also holds a full IPv6 block.

Netup is one of the older names in the Chilean internet. It was among the local providers that came together in the late 1990s to build NAP Chile, the country's domestic traffic-exchange point, at a time when Chilean networks otherwise had to hairpin traffic through the United States to reach each other.

Interesting

The low AS number is genuine rather than a modern reissue: it was originally issued out of the pre-LACNIC pool and transferred to LACNIC when Latin American resources were moved to the new registry. Chilean and Brazilian networks that were online early hold a noticeable cluster of four-digit ASNs for the same reason.
