MONTANA-OPTICOM is Montana Opticom, LLC, a fibre-to-the-premises internet, telephone and television provider in Bozeman, Montana. ARIN registers the ASN to the company's 144 Quail Run Road address in Bozeman, assigned in March 2007.

What it's used for

This is an eyeball access network. RIS sees 43 IPv4 prefixes carrying 16,384 addresses, a single IPv6 prefix (2607:faa0::/32), and 21 observed neighbours. Sixteen thousand addresses reached through roughly two dozen peers is the shape of a regional subscriber ISP that shows up locally and buys a couple of upstreams. A wholesale carrier of comparable address size would show peers by the hundred.

The reverse DNS says plainly what the space carries: adsl-dynamic-204-250-85-5.mt-opticom.net, sdsl-static-206-228-140-5.mt-opticom.net, cust-208-75-140-5.bozeman.lightnex.net. Those are subscriber pools, dynamic and static, under the operator's own domains. The adsl/sdsl labels name the access technology, not the customer type.

Notable

The registrants look scattered until you read them locally. Montana Opticom holds 69.163.80.0/20, 64.79.32.0/20 and 208.83.40.0/21 directly. Several other announced blocks register to Bridgeband Communications, a Bozeman DSL provider that served Bozeman, Belgrade, Livingston and Billings, and the lightnex.net reverse DNS belongs to LightNex Communications, a Bozeman-and-Billings fibre operator. All three are the same small market, and Opticom's own mt-opticom.net names sit on top of the Bridgeband-registered space. That is local consolidation, not the multi-RIR, unrelated-registrant pattern of leased or brokered addresses.

Montana Opticom drew statewide attention around 2010 over a federal rural broadband stimulus award of roughly $64 million to build fibre into rural Gallatin County, which incumbent operators already serving parts of that area publicly disputed.
