AS11238 NWOL-AS

NWOL-AS is NetWest Online, Inc. of 5000 E. University Blvd, Odessa, Texas (ARIN org NWOI) — a West Texas / Permian Basin internet provider that started as a dial-up ISP in the mid-1990s and now sells fixed wireless, fibre, business connectivity and colocation across the Odessa–Midland area.

What it's used for

Regional access and hosting for one operator. RIS observes four IPv4 prefixes / 8,192 addresses, one IPv6 /32 (2605:7100::/32), and two observed neighbours. Two neighbours against 8k addresses is a dual-homed edge network serving its own customers, not a carrier reselling transit.

All four prefixes are contiguous /21s out of 209.240.160.0 and are registered to NetWest's own ARIN networks (NWOL-BLK1, NWOL-CORE-ROUT, 4A-NETWEST-NETWRK). Self-registered space announced by its own holder — none of the multi-registrant, multi-RIR scatter that marks an IP-leasing operation.

Notable

The reverse DNS shows two distinct populations sharing one AS. Most addresses wear generic per-IP names under the operator's own domains (209-240-176-5.netwest.com, 209-240-172-5.nwol.net) — subscriber and infrastructure addressing. But at least one sampled address answers with a customer's own hostname (mcmelegantebeaumont.com), which is what a hosted or colocated web site looks like. A small ISP that also runs a data centre routinely mixes access pools and hosting in the same block.

Interesting

The IPv6 /32 is a notably generous allocation relative to the 8,192 IPv4 addresses — the standard minimum ARIN hands an ISP, and a reminder that IPv6 sizing says nothing about subscriber count.
