AS10175 HCNKUMHO-AS-KR Kumho Cable

HCNKUMHO-AS-KR is the network of HCN Kumho (Geumho) Broadcasting, one of the

regional cable system operators in the HCN group. Korean cable SOs sell

cable TV and broadband to households in a licensed franchise area, and that

is what this AS carries.

What it's used for

• Cable broadband and cable-TV subscriber access for homes in the operator's regional franchise, plus the operator's own head-end and back-office systems.

Notable

• The kind is residential (eyeball), and the shape of the routing is the argument. RIS observes 51 IPv4 prefixes and 46,080 addresses behind a single neighbour. That combination is decisive: a wholesale carrier holding ~46k addresses would be peering with hundreds of ASes, because selling transit is the whole business. One upstream and forty-six thousand addresses is a network that consumes transit on behalf of a lot of end users.
• The prefixes reinforce it. They are the classic Korean eyeball mix drawn from many different KRNIC ranges (114.199.192.0/19, 110.35.192.0/19, 27.35.96.0/20, 49.143.96.0/20, 111.118.96.0/20 and dozens of /22s), i.e. address space accumulated piecemeal as the subscriber base grew, then deaggregated to steer traffic across the franchise.

Interesting

• HCN was a Hyundai Department Store Group cable business; its controlling stake passed to KT Skylife in 2021, so this regional network now sits inside the KT orbit while keeping its own ASN and address space.
