SIMPUR-BN carries the legacy Simpur internet-service address space of Brunei Darussalam. The registry holder today is UNN-BN, Unified National Networks, the wholly state-owned company that took over all of Brunei's telecommunications infrastructure in September 2019 and now runs the country as a single wholesale network.

What it's used for

Access and service space for Brunei end users. The AS announces 25 IPv4 prefixes totalling 8,192 addresses and no IPv6, essentially the whole of 202.152.64.0/19 plus its component /24s deaggregated for traffic engineering. The sampled reverse DNS is uniform first-party ISP naming across the entire range — smp-64-5.simpur.net.bn, smp-83-133.simpur.net.bn, and so on — templated per-address PTRs of the sort an access ISP generates for a whole pool at once.

Notable

The routing shape is an eyeball network, not a carrier. Around 8,200 addresses against just 3 observed BGP neighbours means this network buys transit from a couple of upstreams and sells to nobody; a wholesale operator of any size would peer with hundreds. The Simpur brand outlived the company that coined it, which is a good reminder that a handle names history, not the current holder.

Not all of this is subscriber space. One sampled address, 202.152.87.133, answers as ns1.egc.gov.bn — a nameserver of Brunei's E-Government National Centre. A small country's national network commonly hosts state infrastructure inside the same block as its retail customers, so individual addresses here can be government servers rather than households.
