AS9743 (NIPPONEDUIX-AS-AP) is registered to Nippon EDUIX, a Japanese educational internet-exchange project (Nippon EDU-IX, eduix.jp) operating in the Kantō region. It presents itself as a free, education-oriented exchange rather than a commercial carrier or hosting business.

What it's used for

The routing footprint is about as minimal as an active AS gets. RIS sees no IPv4 prefixes at all and a single IPv6 announcement, 2001:df3:25c0::/48, with one observed BGP neighbour. That is a v6-only, single-upstream presence: enough to be reachable and to originate its own space, and nothing more. It is consistent with a small community or educational exchange whose real function is Layer 2 interconnection between participants — an IXP's peering fabric does not need to be announced in BGP, so the AS itself carries only the project's own infrastructure addressing. The absence of any IPv4 origin is itself notable: it means the project never held or no longer announces legacy v4 space and has built out on IPv6 alone.

• Do not read this as a major Japanese exchange point. The commercial Japanese IXes (JPIX, JPNAP and the like) are separate, far larger operations; this is a small educational effort.
• A low-numbered ASN with a v6-only, single-neighbour footprint usually means the number outlived its original holder and has been re-registered to a newer project. Treat any age inference from the ASN itself with suspicion.
• With one neighbour and no IPv4, this AS carries essentially no third-party traffic; it is an identity for the project, not a transit path.
