AS9688 BORANET-AS-KR LG DACOM Corporation

AS9688 (BORANET-AS-KR) is registered to LG DACOM Corporation. Dacom was the Korean fixed-line and internet operator behind the Boranet brand; it merged with LG Telecom and LG Powercom in 2010 to form LG Uplus, which still carries the Dacom and Boranet names in registry records. The important qualification is that this is not LG Uplus' main network.

What it's used for

The routing evidence and the brand pull in opposite directions, and the inventory is the honest one. RIS sees just 7 IPv4 prefixes carrying 1,792 addresses, no IPv6, and 1 observed BGP neighbour. A national carrier's eyeball or backbone AS looks nothing like that: it would carry millions of addresses and peer with hundreds of networks. What this is, is a small satellite ASN inside the LG Uplus group — the kind of number a carrier keeps alive to originate a specific pocket of address space (a service platform, a particular customer or product block, an acquired estate) behind its own backbone.

The prefixes back that reading up: two tight clusters of contiguous /24s, 103.30.160.0/24 through 103.30.163.0/24 and 180.80.44.0/24 through 180.80.46.0/24, with nothing else. Single-upstream origination of a couple of small contiguous ranges is a service-block pattern, not a network with users. No PTRs came back on the addresses sampled.

Notable

• Do not read this AS as "LG Uplus' network". The group's eyeball and backbone traffic lives in other, far larger ASNs; treat AS9688 as a narrow origin AS under the same corporate roof.
• The LG DACOM holder string is a pre-2010 corporate name that the registry record has never been updated to reflect.
