AS9466 UUNET-JP-AP UUNET Japan Limited

AS9466 (UUNET-JP-AP) is the Japanese network of what is now Verizon Japan Limited. The handle preserves its origin: UUNET Japan was the local arm of UUNET, the pioneering commercial internet provider that passed through MCI WorldCom and ultimately into Verizon Business. Registry and lookup sources now show the organisation as Verizon Japan Limited even though the APNIC as-name was never changed.

What it's used for

RIS observes 22 IPv4 prefixes totalling about 84,000 addresses, 2 IPv6 prefixes (2401:6bff::/40 and 2401:6bff:8000::/40), and only 3 BGP neighbours.

That neighbour count is the key to reading this network. Eighty-four thousand addresses is real scale, but three peers is not a carrier's peering footprint. This is a regional arm attached to a global backbone: it takes transit from Verizon's own Asia-Pacific network and interconnects with a small number of Japanese providers, rather than building an independent peering edge of its own. What it serves is Verizon Business's enterprise customers in Japan — corporate IP connectivity, managed services and the address space assigned to them — not a retail eyeball base.

The prefix list supports that. Alongside a legacy 138.198.0.0/16 there is a long tail of /19s, /21s, /22s and many /24s spread across 202.x, 203.x and a scattering of newer ranges. Sub-/24 fragmentation across many unrelated blocks is what an enterprise service provider's inventory looks like: each customer site or service gets its own small assignment out of whatever space was available at the time.

• The 138.198.0.0/16 is classic UUNET-era space and by far the largest single block the AS originates.
• The AS name is a fossil. "UUNET" as an operating brand has not existed for many years; the network behind this number is Verizon's.
