AS9245 (COMPASS-NZ-AP) is held by Compass Communications, a New Zealand telecommunications and internet service provider. Compass is an independent, locally owned operator selling fibre broadband, voice and business connectivity across New Zealand.

What it's used for

The reverse DNS is unusually clean and settles the role immediately. Almost every sampled address resolves under compassnet.co.nz, and the pattern splits into two kinds: a core router (ccore-terapa-r1.hn.compassnet.co.nz) and a wall of formulaic customer addresses in the shape 5.host-203-152-112.compassnet.co.nz. Templated per-address host names across every announced block is what an access network does when it auto-generates PTRs for subscriber space. There is no hosting or enterprise-tenant naming here at all.

The routing fits. RIS sees 12 IPv4 prefixes carrying 25,600 addresses and one IPv6 allocation, 2405:8400::/32, against 8 observed neighbours. A wholesale carrier holding 25,000 addresses would be peering with hundreds of networks; eight neighbours means Compass buys transit and peers locally, and spends its address space on its own customers rather than carrying anyone else's routes. The estate is a mix of two /19s and a handful of /22s and /24s drawn from several APNIC ranges, which is the normal accretion pattern for a provider that has picked up allocations over time.
