CARRIER1-AS is held today by Coolwave Communications Limited, a Dublin

wholesale voice and messaging carrier (SIP trunking, voice origination and

termination, global DIDs, A2P SMS, IoT SIMs). Coolwave is now part of the Gamma

group — Gamma Telecom appears as one of the AS's upstreams.

What it's used for

• Carrier infrastructure for Coolwave's voice and messaging platform, not consumer or hosting services: roughly 24,000 IPv4 addresses across 212.4.192.0/19 and 213.239.0.0/18, with no IPv6 announced.
• The AS peers heavily for its size, including at AMS-IX and NL-ix — what a voice/messaging wholesaler needs in order to reach its interconnect partners cheaply.

Notable

• The CARRIER1 name is a handle that outlived its holder. Inside 212.4.192.0/19 the individual /24s are still CARRIER1-NETS objects under a CARRIER1-MNT maintainer, while the enclosing allocations were renamed to IE-COOLWAVE-19980810 and IE-COOLWAVE-20000228. Nothing about the current network is a 1990s pan-European carrier.
• Essentially no rDNS resolves across either block, and the delegated reverse servers for the 212.4 space do not answer — so there is no eyeball, hosting or subscriber signature to be found. The space backs a B2B telecoms platform.

Interesting

• The aut-num object still carries import policies for a long list of customer ASNs that no longer appear in the routing table. Routing-policy objects age badly, and a stale aut-num can make a network look far larger than it is.
