AS8891 FTBGPDM

AS8891 is registered to Orange S.A., the French incumbent operator (formerly France Télécom). The FTBGPDM handle and the fti.net reverse DNS both date from the France Télécom era. Despite the holder, this is not Orange's consumer broadband or mobile network.

What it's used for

Orange's own service-platform infrastructure. The AS announces a handful of prefixes out of Orange's 80.12, 81.52 and 193.252 ranges, and every sampled address resolves to internal platform naming inside fti.net:

• routers and firewalls — rt-esiteNN-vNNN.bae.net.m1.fti.net, fw-bae-vNNN-vgwN.orion.net.m1.fti.net
• load-balancer VIPs and HTTP cache pools — vip-cachehttp-…-prod-poolm.s0.fti.net, and a matching …-preprod-… pool
• gateway interfaces — vgw-…-vlanNN.x-echo.com

Notable

• No subscriber pools anywhere. There is not a single dsl-, pppoe-, dyn- or .wanadoo style name in evidence. Orange's eyeball broadband and mobile subscribers live on other, far larger ASNs. Inheriting residential from the Orange brand would be wrong here, and that mistake is exactly what a name-only read produces.
• The prod / preprod pool labels and the m0/m1/s0/s1 site suffixes are the tell: this is Orange's internal application-delivery estate, including caches and gateways for its own services (an m2m pool appears among them).
• Classified business — corporate/service infrastructure operated by and for the holder, in the same sense as a carrier's internal IT AS. It is not transit, hosting, or an access network.
