AS8787 AMARISTECH

AMARISTECH is Amaris Technologies GmbH, a Vienna IT-services company registered in 1998 and a long-standing RIPE member. It sells managed IT, backup and recovery, hosting and provider services rather than mass-market broadband.

What it's used for

The AS is a single-purpose one: it announces exactly one prefix, 212.9.128.0/19 (about 8,200 addresses), plus one IPv6 prefix, with a single observed BGP neighbour. This is a small provider hanging off one upstream, not a carrier.

Reverse DNS on the sampled addresses is generic and address-derived — 212-9-128-1.dot.at, 212-9-128-100.dot.at — under the company's dot.at domain. That naming carries no dsl, pppoe, pool or dyn marker, so there is nothing here indicating a consumer access network; it reads as default rDNS over a block of hosted and customer-assigned servers.

Notable

• The 212.9.128.0/19 block has been announced from this AS since RIS records begin in 2000, and it is the only prefix the AS has ever carried. Very few networks are that static for a quarter of a century.
• The company is small — around three dozen staff — which is a reminder that a low AS number reflects when a network was numbered, not how big it grew.

Interesting

The dot.at domain in the reverse DNS is not the company's trading name, which is the usual trap: an operator's registry handle, its legal name and the domain it happens to use for infrastructure naming are three separate things, and only the last one tells you which addresses belong together.
