AS8775 ICMM-UB-RAS

ICMM-UB-RAS is the network of the Perm Federal Research Center of the Ural

Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, grown out of the Institute of

Continuous Media Mechanics (ICMM) in Perm. It is an academic-institute AS, not a

commercial provider.

What it's used for

• Connectivity for the research institutes federated under the Perm centre. The reverse DNS names them directly: hosts under icmm.ru (Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics) and iegm.ru (Institute of Ecology and Genetics of Microorganisms) sit side by side in the same /24s.
• Institutional services rather than end-user access: name servers, mail, web and compute front-ends for the constituent institutes.

Notable

• Tiny by design. Roughly 1,000 IPv4 addresses in a 195.69.156.0/22 and its component /24s, with a couple of BGP neighbours. Russian Academy of Sciences sites are typically single-homed behind a regional academic network, and this one looks it.
• The address use is institutional, not eyeball: no dynamic pools, no PPPoE or DSL naming, no subscriber estate. Whatever residential traffic exists on campus is incidental.
• ICMM is a continuum-mechanics institute, so the compute behind these addresses is the kind that runs fluid-dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics simulations rather than serving a student body.
