Hellenic Mediterranean University (TEI-OF-CRETE-AS) — the public university of

Crete based in Heraklion, with campuses in Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and

Ierapetra. It was formerly the Technological Educational Institute of Crete,

which is what the handle still says.

What it's used for

• Campus networking: departmental subnets, servers, labs and student and staff access across the island's campuses. rDNS lands on hmu.gr throughout, with hosts named for their site and role — gwher.nmc.hmu.gr for the Heraklion network-management centre, ds.chania.hmu.gr for Chania.
• Around 66,000 addresses, dominated by a legacy 147.95.0.0/16 class B, and announced through a single upstream — the standard shape of a Greek university hanging off GRNET, the national research and education network.

Notable

• Institutional address space. The population behind it is students, researchers and staff on campus, not consumers or hosted servers; there are no dynamic, PPPoE or subscriber-pool naming conventions anywhere in the sampled rDNS.
• The handle is out of date, not wrong. TEI of Crete was upgraded to full university status and renamed in 2019; the AS object and the rDNS have moved on to hmu.gr, but the registry handle preserves the old name. Handles outlive their holders.

Interesting

• A whole /16 for one regional university is a mark of an early allocation — more addresses than the institution could plausibly need, handed out when IPv4 scarcity was not yet a consideration.
