AS8706 VDA-AS

VDA-AS belongs to LLC Volga-Dnepr Airlines, the Russian heavy-cargo carrier

based in Ulyanovsk — best known for operating the Antonov An-124 fleet that moves

outsize and oversized freight worldwide.

What it's used for

• The airline's own corporate network. It announces exactly one prefix, 193.104.102.0/24 (RIPE netname VDA-NET, registered to Volga-Dnepr under its own maintainer), giving 256 IPv4 addresses and no IPv6.
• No rDNS is delegated on the block and there are no downstream networks, so this is internal enterprise addressing — offices, operations systems, remote access — rather than anything published to the internet.

Notable

• Two BGP neighbours and a single /24: a textbook provider-independent enterprise AS, held so the company can multihome its own space rather than depend on one carrier's addressing.
• The low AS number carries no early-internet history. Both the AS object and the /24 were registered in November 2009 — a reclaimed two-byte number reissued to a modern holder.

Interesting

• Address space held by an airline is a reminder that AS numbers follow operational need, not industry: a company that needs resilient connectivity between hangars, hubs and flight-ops systems ends up on the routing table alongside ISPs.
