ATHENAnet — the campus network of the **National and Kapodistrian University

of Athens**, Greece's oldest university (founded 1837). The RIR objects place it

at Panepistimioupolis, Ilisia, the university's main Athens campus.

What it's used for

• Campus networking for students, faculty, laboratories and university services. Its two large provider-independent blocks, 195.134.64.0/18 and 88.197.0.0/17, are both registered as ATHENA-NET directly to the university, and forward DNS confirms the use: university hosts such as noc.uoa.gr and departmental servers resolve into 195.134.64.0/18.
• The name is institutional, not commercial. "Region" in the registry description refers to the academic and research region the network serves, not a telecom footprint.

Notable

• Single-homed to [AS5408](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS5408), GRNET, the Greek national research and education network. Greek universities take their transit from GRNET rather than from commercial carriers, which is the standard NREN arrangement across Europe.
• Around 50,000 addresses with no reverse DNS published on the sampled space, a common posture for a campus that numbers most of its estate behind NAT and firewalls.

Interesting

• Provider-independent (PI) status on both blocks means the university owns the addresses outright rather than borrowing them from GRNET. That is what lets a campus change upstream without renumbering.
