CHUVSU — the Chuvash State University named after I. N. Ulyanov, in

Cheboksary, the capital of the Chuvash Republic in the Volga region of Russia.

The AS carries the university's campus network.

What it's used for

• Campus connectivity. About 1,500 IPv4 addresses in two prefixes, with two BGP neighbours — a small stub academic network.
• rDNS resolves entirely under chuvsu.ru, and the host names are unusually literal. They encode building, floor, room and occupant: g-205, g-106-2-otdel (department), g-k-206-buh-mat-gr (accounting), b-200-1-23-ESPP-engeneer (an engineer's workstation), and even ii-lift for a lift controller.

Notable

• Institutional address space, hand-labelled by a network administrator who numbered the campus room by room. Nothing here resembles subscriber or hosting space.
• The registry name is the full legal formulation — "Federal State Educational Institution of higher professional Education" — which is standard for Russian state universities and says nothing beyond that this is a public institution.

Interesting

• The rDNS is effectively a floor plan. Reverse zones like this one are quietly one of the most informative artifacts a university network leaves in public DNS, and they persist for decades because nobody has a reason to clean them up.
