AS8618 Ionion University

The Ionian University (Ιόνιο Πανεπιστήμιο), based in Corfu and founded in

1984. The AS carries the university's campus network. Note the registry spells

the holder "Ionion University".

What it's used for

• Campus connectivity for the university's departments, single-homed to Greece's national research and education network. About 2,000 IPv4 addresses across four small prefixes.
• rDNS lands under ionio.gr — named servers, gateways and a PlanetLab research node pair (planetlab1.ionio.gr, planetlab2.ionio.gr) — and under teiion.gr, with departmental and administrative machines (pc101-200.de.teiion.gr, arg-dioik.teiion.gr).

Notable

• The teiion.gr names are the interesting part: they belong to the former Technological Educational Institute of the Ionian Islands, which was absorbed into the Ionian University in 2019. The merged institution kept the old domain live rather than renumber, so a single AS now carries two generations of Greek higher-education naming.
• Institutional space throughout. The dial-athens.ionio.gr and dialup3.ionio.gr hosts are the university's own legacy remote-access servers, not a commercial dial-up ISP.

Interesting

• The PlanetLab nodes are a fossil of the 2000s distributed-systems research testbed, which ran on machines donated by universities worldwide. The testbed is long shut down; the PTR records outlived it.
