AS8617 University of the Aegean

The University of the Aegean (Πανεπιστήμιο Αιγαίου), a Greek public

university that is unusual for being spread across six islands — Lesbos, Chios,

Samos, Rhodes, Syros and Lemnos. The AS carries its campus network.

What it's used for

• Campus connectivity for the university's departments and schools. Roughly 8,000 IPv4 addresses across four /21s, single-homed to the Greek national research and education network.
• rDNS resolves under aegean.gr where it is delegated at all — much of the space returns nothing, which is normal for a campus that keeps most hosts on internal naming.

Notable

• Institutional address space: a stub academic AS with one upstream and no downstream customers. Nothing here is eyeball or hosting space.
• The four /21s are consecutive but not contiguous, which fits the geography: the university's departments are physically separated across the Aegean islands and each site was numbered as it came online.
• One of a cluster of Greek university ASNs allocated in the same range, next to [AS8611](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS8611) (Athens University of Economics and Business) and [AS8618](https://asn.ipinfo.app/AS8618) (Ionian University).

Interesting

• Very few universities anywhere have to run their production network across a chain of islands. The Greek research network's inter-island links are what make a single AS possible here at all.
