WAVENET-AS8613 — Wavenet Limited, a UK managed IT, communications and

security provider headquartered in Solihull. The AS carries connectivity for its

business customers.

What it's used for

• Corporate internet access and managed services. Around 17,000 IPv4 addresses in three prefixes plus an IPv6 /32, and a single observed BGP neighbour: this is customer-facing access space, not a transit backbone.
• The RIPE objects tell the story better than the rDNS does. The allocations are carved into per-customer assignments with netnames of the form CUST-NAME — a healthcare supplier, a transport operator and others — which is the standard shape for a B2B provider handing static blocks to named businesses.
• Where rDNS is populated it lands on customer services: an e-procurement platform, hosted applications and static assignments. The unassigned remainder falls back to the default IP-DASHED.nodns.phoenix.co.uk.

Notable

• Business address space, with no dynamic, PPPoE or dial-up pools anywhere in the sampled rDNS. Wavenet has grown largely by acquisition, and it shows: the default rDNS zone still belongs to an earlier holder of the blocks, unrelated to the current Wavenet brand.
• The allocations themselves are old — the RIPE netnames encode 1996 and 1999 allocation dates — even though the current holder is a modern MSP.

Interesting

• Wavenet also operates other AS numbers picked up through acquisitions. The prefixes here are still maintained under a different acquired operator's maintainer object, a small archaeological trace of the merger history.
