AS8605 LANET

LANET is the Latvian Academic Network, run by the University of Latvia. It

is Latvia's national research and education network, connecting the country's

universities, institutes, schools and libraries.

What it's used for

• Campus and inter-institution connectivity for Latvian academia. The AS announces a small, tidy inventory (roughly 7,000 IPv4 addresses in three prefixes, plus one IPv6 /48) and keeps just a couple of BGP neighbours — the profile of a stub NREN rather than a commercial carrier.
• rDNS is unambiguously academic: lanet.lv for network infrastructure and member sites (lielvardes-gw.lanet.lv, cfi-gw.lanet.lv gateways), and lu.lv for the University of Latvia itself, broken out by faculty and department (ef.lu.lv for economics, admin.lu.lv for administration, med-farmakologi1.lu.lv for pharmacology).

Notable

• The rDNS is full of named desk machines, printers and staff workstations rather than generic pools. That is the classic institutional signature: static assignments a network administrator hand-labels, not eyeball subscriber space.
• LANET is the operational home of the .lv academic community and connects onward to the pan-European research backbone, so the addresses behave like university space even where a member organisation is not a university.

Interesting

• The University of Latvia does double duty here: it is both a member of the network and its operator. Several small national NRENs in Europe were founded the same way, inside whichever university first got a link out of the country.
