AS8524 is held by The American University in Cairo (AUC), the private

English-language university in Egypt whose main campus is in New Cairo. The RIPE

handle on its address space is eg-auc.

What it's used for

• Campus networking for AUC: faculty and student systems, libraries, laboratories and the university's public-facing services.
• The AS announces about 4,300 addresses, carved as a long run of consecutive 213.181.22x–24x /24s out of the university's own 213.181.224.0 allocation.

Notable

• The RIPE object describes the block plainly as an Enterprise Local Registry assigned to the university — the address space is registered to AUC itself, not routed on its behalf by an Egyptian carrier, which is unusual for a university in the region and reflects an early, direct membership.
• Sampled addresses publish no public reverse DNS. A campus that keeps PTR records internal is common; what matters here is that nothing in the block looks like provider or subscriber space, and the AS has only four BGP neighbours.

Interesting

• AUC has been one of Egypt's earliest and most persistent internet sites, which is how a single university ended up holding a four-digit AS number and its own contiguous /19-sized allocation.
