AS8522 FORTH-AS

FORTH-AS belongs to the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas,

Greece's largest research centre, headquartered in Heraklion, Crete. Its Institute

of Computer Science (ICS-FORTH) runs the network, which also served as one of the

earliest internet nodes in Greece.

What it's used for

• Campus and institute connectivity for FORTH's research institutes and their staff, laboratories and servers.
• Hosting for research infrastructure and shared services run by ICS-FORTH, including measurement and monitoring nodes for international projects.

Notable

• The core of the inventory is the legacy 139.91.0.0/16 — a full class-B equivalent, about 65,000 addresses, held by a single research foundation. That scale of assignment is a hallmark of an early allocation rather than of the network's present-day size.
• rDNS is almost entirely ics.forth.gr: name servers, mail gateways and institutional hosts. Guest research nodes appear inside the block too — for example a monitoring host belonging to Brazil's registro.br — which is normal for a research campus that hosts probes for international projects.
• No dynamic, DSL or subscriber naming anywhere: institutional address space throughout.

Interesting

• FORTH's networking group has a long history in Greek and European research networking, and the low AS number together with the /16 reflects its role in connecting Greece to the early internet.
