AS8464 MAINGATE-AS

Sierra Wireless Sweden AB (maingate-AS) is the network of Wireless Maingate, a

Swedish machine-to-machine connectivity provider founded in 1998 and bought by

Sierra Wireless in 2015. Sierra Wireless itself was later acquired by Semtech.

What it's used for

• Managed cellular connectivity for IoT and M2M devices: metering, telematics, alarms, payment terminals and similar equipment, reached over partner mobile networks rather than the company's own radio access.
• The platform and core that terminates those device sessions and hands the traffic to customers.

Notable

• A carrier network in shape but not an eyeball or handset operator: the traffic is machines, not people. Around 2,000 IPv4 addresses over three prefixes plus an IPv6 /32, with only a couple of BGP neighbours.
• Very little reverse DNS is published, which is normal for device-facing M2M address pools that are never meant to be reached from the outside.

Interesting

• The handle maingate-AS outlived the company that registered it: the AS has changed corporate owner at least twice, but the reference to Maingate's own M2M management platform remains in the registry.
