AS8395 EAST-AS

EAST-AS is East Telecom Ltd, a Moscow provider that has been on the network

since the late 1990s. It announces a single /19, 195.170.32.0/19, out of a RIPE

allocation whose netname still records a 1997 registration.

What it's used for

• Connectivity and hosting for corporate customers. Reverse DNS makes the model obvious: each customer sits behind a named gateway of the CUSTOMER-east-gw.east.ru form, and other addresses resolve straight into the customers' own domains, including a Moscow law firm, a bank and assorted companies.
• Server and mail hosting on the same block, mixed in with the access customers.

Notable

• A business ISP, not an eyeball network. There are no dynamic subscriber pools in the reverse DNS. Every name is either a customer's border router or a named host, which is what a provider serving offices rather than flats looks like.
• The whole AS is one /19, about 8,000 addresses, plus an IPv6 block. Small and stable, which fits an operator that has served the same kind of customer for decades rather than chasing scale.

Interesting

• The naming convention is a small time capsule. Numbering each customer's link router after the customer, in the provider's own domain, is a habit from an era when a provider had few enough customers to name them all by hand. Networks that grew large replaced it with generated pool names long ago.
