MARLINK-SK is held by Marlink AS, the Norwegian-headquartered satellite

communications provider (Lysaker, near Oslo). Marlink is one of the largest

maritime satcom operators, serving merchant shipping, offshore energy, fishing

fleets and remote enterprise and humanitarian sites over VSAT, Inmarsat, Iridium

and, increasingly, LEO services.

What it's used for

• Terminating customer traffic delivered over satellite: vessels at sea, offshore platforms, and land-based sites with no terrestrial connectivity.
• The AS announces two long-held RIPE allocations, 212.197.0.0/17 and 195.20.160.0/19, whose netnames (NO-MARLINK-19980702, NO-MARLINK-19971007) date the space to 1997 and 1998.

Notable

• Do not geolocate this space. An address on a Marlink terminal is wherever the ship, rig or camp currently is. The registry country attributes on the allocations do not agree with the holder's Norwegian address either, so any single country pin is misleading.
• Reverse DNS is essentially absent across the sampled space, consistent with addresses handed to customer terminals rather than named infrastructure.

Interesting

• The AS in "Marlink AS" is the Norwegian aksjeselskap (limited company), not an autonomous system. Two different AS in one holder name.
