AS8076 HUD

HUD is the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the federal agency

responsible for housing policy, fair-housing enforcement and the FHA mortgage

insurance programme.

What it's used for

• HUD's own internet-facing infrastructure. All of its announced IPv4 comes out of 170.97.0.0/16, the /16 registered to the department at ARIN, and it also announces IPv6 from 2620:0:c91::/48 and 2620:0:c92::/48.

Notable

• Only about 2,500 addresses are actually announced, in a dozen small /24s — a fraction of the /16 HUD holds. Federal agencies routinely announce far less space than they are registered for.
• A single observed BGP neighbour. Like most civilian federal agencies, HUD does not run a transit network; it buys connectivity and announces a thin slice of public-facing space.
• There are no reverse-DNS records on the announced prefixes, which is common for government networks that expose few services directly.

Interesting

• The 2620:0::/23 range these IPv6 blocks sit in is ARIN's direct-assignment space, widely used by US institutions and agencies — so the IPv6 prefixes here look like any other US enterprise's, with nothing to mark them as federal.
