WORLDNET5-10 — registered to AT&T WorldNet, the name of AT&T's 1990s

consumer dial-up service. The name is the trap. WorldNet as a consumer ISP is

long gone, and what this AS carries today is AT&T's **enterprise VPN and managed

network** addressing. It is not an eyeball network.

What it's used for

• Internet-gateway pools for AT&T's enterprise VPN service. Most announced prefixes are ARIN assignments named ATTxx EVPN-* — ATTUS, ATTLA, ATTCA, ATTEMA, ATTAP — one set per AT&T region, drawn from the legacy 32.0.0.0/8 and 12.0.0.0/8 space.
• A handful of AT&T Services allocations (135.42.0.0/16 fragments, 192.20.0.0/19), and a few customer routes that are not AT&T at all: some 170.141.x /24s belong to the State of Tennessee.

Notable

• Reverse DNS is deliberately blank across the space — AT&T answers nothing.attdns.com — so the netnames, not the DNS, are the honest witness here, and they say enterprise VPN service, not subscriber.
• Only one observed BGP neighbour: this AS hangs entirely off AT&T's own backbone rather than peering.
• Because it mixes AT&T service pools with third-party customer prefixes, an address in it should be geolocated and typed with care. The holder name tells you nothing about the site at the far end.

Interesting

• AT&T WorldNet launched in 1996, the same year this ASN was registered, and was one of the first big-brand consumer ISPs in the US. The number outlived the product by nearly two decades.
