AS8011 MONGO-8011

MONGO-8011 — the Autonomous System of MongoDB, Inc., the database company

behind the MongoDB document database and its managed cloud service, Atlas. The

AS number is a reissued low number: ARIN registered it to MongoDB on

2024-12-26, so it carries no early-internet history.

What it's used for

• MongoDB's own network and cloud service addressing. Atlas runs customer database clusters, and a company operating a managed data platform at that scale needs addresses it controls rather than borrowing a hyperscaler's.

Notable

• The address inventory is unusually large for a software vendor — roughly 47 announced IPv4 prefixes and several hundred thousand addresses — and it spans three RIRs: ARIN (65.62.0.0/15, 159.41.0.0/16, 159.143.0.0/16), RIPE (89.194.0.0/17, 89.195.128.0/17) and an APNIC range in 218.254.0.0/16.
• That multi-RIR spread is the same silhouette an address broker throws, so it is worth being explicit: it is not one here. Every block is registered directly to MongoDB — netnames MONGO-159-41, MONGO-65-62, MONGO-89-192, and an Irish LIR object for the APNIC-region space — with MongoDB's own New York address on the RIPE record. This is one company buying transferred legacy space on the open market, not a shell assembling third-party /24s.
• Reverse DNS is essentially absent across the whole footprint, and the AS shows only a couple of BGP neighbours. Much of the space looks acquired and held rather than heavily lit.

Interesting

• The number was almost certainly bought alongside the addresses. Two-byte AS numbers, like IPv4, now trade on a secondary market.
