AS7992 COGECOWAVE

COGECOWAVE is the main Autonomous System of Cogeco Connexion, Canada's cable

broadband operator in Ontario and Québec. It is a large eyeball network — close to

a million IPv4 addresses of home and small-business subscribers.

What it's used for

• Residential cable internet. The rDNS is unmistakable subscriber addressing: d24-36-0-NNN.home1.cgocable.net, d67-193-0-NNN.home3.cgocable.net — a home zone with per-address d-prefixed names, spread across numbered CMTS regions.
• Business and static-IP service on a parallel zone, dNN-NN-NN-NN.static.comm.cgocable.net.
• Cogeco's own backbone and headend infrastructure, which surfaces under names like cgowave-busy-core-s0-0.cgocable.net.

Notable

• An IP in AS7992 almost always maps to a subscriber, not a server. It is a normal source of consumer browsing, streaming and gaming traffic, and a poor place to find hosting.
• Cogeco is one of the older cable ISPs still holding its own low AS number: the cgocable.net naming and the classic 24.0.0.0/8 cable ranges (24.36.0.0/16, 24.150.0.0/16, 24.141.0.0/16 and more) date from the era when 24/8 was set aside for cable modem service.

Interesting

• Cogeco has kept growing by buying transferred legacy address space, and it shows: it now announces 57.134.128.0/17 and 9.168.0.0/16 — chunks carved out of two of the oldest Class A blocks in the registry — plus 80.86.16.0/20, which was moved out of the RIPE region into ARIN. All of them resolve to ordinary cgocable.net subscriber and static-business names, so they are Canadian eyeball addresses despite where the blocks originally came from.
