AS7717 OPENIXP-AS-ID-AP OpenIXP ASN

OPENIXP-AS-ID-AP is the ASN of OpenIXP, an Indonesian internet exchange point operated by PT. IDC Indonesia from the Cyber Building in Jakarta. It is exchange infrastructure, not an ISP.

What it's used for

• Running the exchange's own infrastructure: route servers, the peering LAN's supporting services, and management hosts. Reverse DNS on the space is institutional, with names under openixp.net.
• The ASN's BGP adjacency list is the giveaway: it sits next to well over a hundred Indonesian networks, which is the shape of a route-server-mediated exchange fabric rather than a transit customer cone.
• It holds a small handful of prefixes, including a /24 from the 198.32.0.0/16 block that has historically been used for exchange-point peering LANs worldwide.

Notable

• This AS has no honest place in an ISP-style classification. An IXP does not serve end users, host content, or sell transit. Its addresses belong to the exchange fabric itself, and traffic seen from them is peering infrastructure, not a customer.
• Geolocating the prefixes is meaningful only at the level of "the exchange's facilities in Jakarta" — they do not correspond to subscribers or to the members that peer across it.
• OpenIXP was one of the exchanges that helped keep Indonesian domestic traffic inside Indonesia rather than trombone it through overseas transit.

Interesting

• The exchange operator, PT. IDC Indonesia, is a different organisation from the ASN's public-facing name, which is a common pattern for IXPs that were spun up by a datacentre business.
