KDDLAB is the research network of KDDI Research, Inc. — the corporate R&D arm of Japanese carrier KDDI, known for most of its life as KDD R&D Laboratories and based in Fujimino, Saitama.

What it's used for

• A small network: 202.255.44.0/22 and 192.26.91.0/24, about 1,280 addresses, alongside several IPv6 blocks including 2001:200:600::/40.
• Reverse DNS lands entirely in kddilabs.jp — hosts such as kddlab.kddilabs.jp and dmz-host-fw.kddilabs.jp. This is laboratory and DMZ infrastructure, not customer space. There are no subscriber pools anywhere in it.
• The lab works on network, mobile, security and AI research; the AS carries its own experimental and public-facing systems.

Notable

• A research / corporate network. It should not be attributed to KDDI's commercial carrier business, which routes on entirely different ASNs.
• The 192.26.91.0/24 prefix is early "Class C" swamp space, and the IPv6 allocation sits inside 2001:200::/23, the block APNIC delegated to Japanese research networks. Both are consistent with a very early participant rather than a modern registration.

Interesting

• The kddlab name is one of the oldest still in service on the Japanese internet: KDD's international links were how JUNET, Japan's first research network, reached the outside world in the 1980s, and the lab's hosts have been long-running public mirror and FTP sites for decades since.
